Probably my favorite lines that captures the melancholy of the poem so well -- without weighing the poem down -- are "I wish I could say that the music makes the dust clear/and the sun shine brighter through the window." And I really like the crispness of "Everyone plays middle-C; I choose A." It would be way too easy to lose this poem in sentimentality. But you've done a great job of steering clear of that.
